MTNL shares surged by up to 18% on Thursday, March 13, during morning trading after it was revealed in Parliament that the telecom company had earned Rs 2,134 crore through asset monetisation.
Since 2019, state-owned telecom companies BSNL and MTNL have generated a total of Rs 12,984.86 crore by monetising land, buildings, towers, and fibre, as reported to Parliament on Wednesday.
At 12:10 PM, MTNL shares were trading at Rs 48.68 on the National Stock Exchange, up by 12.58%. The company’s market capitalisation stood at Rs 3,066.84 crore.
According to data provided by Minister of State for Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, BSNL has earned Rs 2,387.82 crore from asset monetisation, while MTNL earned Rs 2,134.61 crore as of January 2025.
In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Sekhar explained that BSNL and MTNL were monetising only those land and building assets that were not needed for their future operations and for which they had the legal rights to transfer ownership.
Furthermore, BSNL had earned Rs 8,204.18 crore, while MTNL had earned Rs 258.25 crore from monetising towers and fibre assets up until January 2025.
Sekhar emphasized that the asset monetisation process was being conducted according to the government’s approved policy, with its impact on the public sector undertakings being closely monitored.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), BSNL and MTNL lost a combined total of 1,213,587 wireless subscribers. Private telecom providers now control 91.92% of the wireless subscriber market, leaving BSNL and MTNL with only 8.08% market share.
In February, BSNL was the largest loser in the wireline segment, shedding 33,306 subscribers, while its sister company MTNL lost 14,054.
MTNL Share Performance
MTNL shares have gained 14.62% in the last five trading sessions and soared by over 48% over the past year. However, the stock has fallen by 5.22% year-to-date and by almost 18% in the last six months, from September 13, 2024.
The company reached its 52-week high of Rs 101.93 on July 29, 2024, and its 52-week low was Rs 31.20 on March 20, 2024.
